A beautifully restored flour mill which has been converted into an 11 bedroom hotel by the banks of the river Guadiaro in the Sierra de Grazalema. The owners and designers of the hotel have skillfully highlighted the historical architectural details of the mill whilst adding modern facilities, respecting the history of the building and creating a comfortable graceful space that feels part of the countryside around it. The hotel is disposed around a traditional spanish central courtyard with the original water channels which powered the mill, flowing beneath and is surrounded by gardens, set in wild countryside and with tourist attractions nearby.
The Hotel
There are ten rooms with private bathrooms, some of which have views to the river and some of which face the large shady courtyard. One of the rooms has its own private river facing balcony and there is also a family room with a mezzanine for two single beds.
There is also an open plan apartment with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and sitting room which could be converted into a two bed apartment.
It also has its own managerial or owner’s accommodation which has three bedrooms and its own large living room kitchen area and bathroom, off the central courtyard.
The central courtyard is extensive and shady, with communal areas on the first floor of the building, such as reception, a large games room, a communal living room with a wood burner and the dining room and bar.
An excellent sized restaurant kitchen is also available and there are staff changing rooms and shower rooms along with many other storage and utility areas.
There is a veranda running around the first floor of the building accessed from the courtyard and providing access to the rooms, with traditional wrought iron railings and arches throughout.
The dining room is cozy and contains a wood burner with beamed high ceilings and which leads out onto a terrace for outdoor eating and facing the river. Down some stairs there is another extensive riverside terrace surrounded by river vegetation and within a glimpse of the famous Cueva del Gato.
Nearby is the hotel swimming pool, of good size and with an ample area for sunbathing and a covered area for eating, relaxing and taking in the surrounding views.
There are oleander lined paths from the gardens of the hotel to swimming spots in the river and to the Cueva del Gato, the impressive entrance to a large subterranean fluvial system under the mountains.
The Area
Located near the village of Benaojan, it is an ideal place to explore the mountain scenery if you are a walker, love spelunking or a birdwatcher. There are all the pueblos Blancos to visit in beautiful settings or of historical interest and enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife in the nearby national parks of Sierra de Grazalema and Sierra de las Nieves.
The historic town of Ronda is 20 minutes drive from the hotel.It is famed for being perched above an impressive gorge carved through time by the river Guadalevin. With a long history of settlers from the early Celts to the Phoenicians, the Romans, and a long Arabic rule, it is of architectural, natural and geological interest. It is one of the most visited towns in Spain, with the impressive bullring, immortalised by Hemmingway one of the main attractions, as well as being availed of many bars and restaurants offering local cuisine, including a Michelin star restaurant.
Surrounding Benaojan there is the paleolithic cave Cueva de la Pileta, with beautiful representations of paleolithic and early neolithic cave art. Privately owned, you will not find a souvenir shop and members of the family that first found the cave in 1905 still guide visitors through the galleries.
La Cueva del Gato is next to the hotel, an impressive cave which is the entrance to a complex underwater system which is still being explored. There is a fresh water lagoon at the foot of the cave entrance which is a popular swimming spot for locals and tourists.
Benaojan itself has a train station connecting the village to Ronda and from there to Malaga and Madrid on the fast train. It is famed for its pork products and has bars and restaurants in which to sample the local delicacies. Nearby is the pretty village of Benaojan, surrounded by magnificent views of the mountains of the sierra de Grazalema.
