Stunning country property for sale Gaucin Andalucia
Gaucin country property for sale ref MBP1
This beautifully restored stone traditional Andalusian country cottage is set in 3.1 hectares of idyllic countryside, in the mountains near the village of Gaucín. Restored and designed with an eye for detail that utilises the original features and scope of the building to create a light, spacious, minimalist home built with traditional, reclaimed materials, that is part of the landscape and takes full advantage of the privileged position of the property.
The house is rectangular in shape, surrounded by paved terraces or porches that run along the length of the house, and built out of the local stone, save for the bedroom and mezzanine floor which are an extension of the original building.
The front door on the side of the house leads into a wide open plan living space, with an old stone column that supports a wooden frame for the pitched roof made out of large reclaimed beams. The ceiling above the living space is double height and made of white painted beams and planks in the traditional style. There is a double door on the opposite side of the extensive room leading out onto a paved porch and the large terrace at the front of the house, which in turn leads onto the swimming pool area. There is a wood burning stove sufficient for heating the house as well as air conditioning that can be used for both cooling and heating, and shelving on the wall running along the left side of the room. To the left is the eating area and American style kitchen with a white marble counter.
The kitchen is well appointed, light and spacious and has been hand made with painted celosia cupboards and local white marble counters throughout. The kitchen also has a reclaimed wooden beamed frame that demarcates it from the living and eating areas without closing it off.
To the back of the kitchen, there is a passageway containing a larder and leading onto a bathroom and guest bedroom.
The guest bedroom is of a good size with high beamed ceilings, hand made wardrobe, an exposed stone wall, and a double door leading out onto the covered porch. The bathroom is tiled with terracotta and of a good size with wooden ceiling.
Up the stairs, at the back of the house with exposed stone wall and wrought iron banisters, you reach the master bedroom and mezzanine floor.
To the right of the stairs, the master bedroom is light, with wooden beamed ceilings and large double doors that let in the light and the view surrounding the house. It also has hand made wardrobes and an adjoining shower room with a glass brick wall.
To the left of the bathroom up the stairs is a mezzanine room opening out onto the floor below, with large double sized windows to let in the light and scenery.
The cottage is surrounded by 3.1 hectares of rolling hills with a flat expanse around the house and is set in virgin countryside, commanding expansive views of the surrounding mountains and forest. Dry stone walls create terracing and give form to the land around the house, which is planted with many flowers and some ancient olive trees.
The terrace to the front of the house is covered with cane thatching with waterproofed covering, and has some built in seating. The same cane thatching creates a covered porch running along both sides of the house.
The swimming pool is of a good size with an extensive paved terrace on the same level as the terrace to the front of the house, with plenty of space from which to sunbathe and take in the views surrounding the property.
The property is 15 minutes from the village of Gaucin and El Colmenar at the bottom of the valley.
Gaucin is one of the white villages in the Serrania de Ronda, the range of mountains in the province of Malaga inland from Marbella, Puerto Banus, and Estepona and half an hour from Ronda. Gaucin is known for its sweeping views down to Gibraltar, the Strait of Gibraltar and Morocco, the mythical Pillars of Hercules, as well as the surrounding mountain scenery of wild natural beauty. Lying 600 metres above sea level, it is presided by the Castillo del Águila, a castle that was once a Roman stronghold and expanded by the Arabs.
Gaucin has been the inspiration for many artists and writers. The art collective Art Gaucín holds an open studios event once a year and many exhibitions throughout the year. There is a Gaucin Writers group that publishes a short story anthology once a year and holds creative writing classes, seminars and retreats. The expansive countryside surrounding the village is criss-crossed by walking trails and there is a well established group of walkers who take to the hills every week. There are many local festivities through the year, including the reenaction of the taking of Gaucin by the French Napoleonic troops.
It is serviced by several good bars and restaurants, has plenty of shops for essentials, antiques and handmade goods as well as a health food shop.
Well connected by road to Malaga, the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar, it also has a train station in the village of Colmenar lower in the valley that connects you to Algeciras, Ronda and from there to Madrid and Malaga by fast train.
El Colmenar is a small village that has grown around the train station servicing Gaucin. Lying in the bottom of the Guadiaro river valley and surrounded by a vast cork forest, one of the last rainforests in Europe, it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. With many great and private swimming spots along the river, it is a popular place for eating out at various restaurants and picnicking at the river bank in the summer for a swim, avoiding the crowded beaches of the Costa del Sol. Despite the fact that it feels remote, Algeciras, San Roque and Ronda easily accessed by train, and from Ronda to Malaga and Madrid. Accessed by road from Gaucin and the village of Cortes, which is a very picturesque drive through the cork forest with amazing views and vulture feeding ground provide entertainment on the way.
